Creating a Table of Contents in Microsoft Word (03)

Objective:

The object of this job aid is to line up page numbers in a table of contents.

 
 
Step one:
 

Set up a right tab (FORMAT > TAB > TAB STOP POSITION (select 6" or something like that)).

 
 
Step two:
 

Type in the heading description. For example - Introduction.

 
 
Step three:
 
Press the tab key once. Your cursor should jump to the end of the line you are on. Type in the page number for that heading.
 
 

Step four:

 

Highlight the entire line including the page number.

 
 

Step five:

 

While the line is highlighted, select FORMAT from the tool bar. Select TABS. Choose the tab in the TAB stop position list (should be 6" if you used that number in step 1).

 
 

Step six:

 

Click the dot next to 2 ....... under LEADER, then click OK. The results should look like this:

Introduction.........................................................................3

 
 

Step seven:

 

From then on, every line you type will have the dots and line the page number up on the right.
